Ella bangs drum for orchestra

A SEVEN-year-old schoolgirl from Beverley will be the youngest of 10 drummers spanning 10 decades striking an explosive start to Hull Philharmonic Orchestra's new season.

The volunteer drummers, aged between seven and 90, will replicate the cannon shots of the final part of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Over-ture to open the performance at Hull City Hall tomorrow.

They will be led by Chris Bradley, one of the country's top percussionists.

The youngest drummer will be Ella Sharp, a pupil at St Mary's CE Primary School in Beverley.

Her father, Maurice is a former player in the Hull Phil and Ella has been rehearsing with the orchestra as a change to her normal violin and piano practice.

The 1812 Overture, first performed in 1842, features cannons and bells, commemorating the Russian defeat of Napoleon.

The orchestra's previous request programme two years ago sold out the City Hall and Mr Penny is hoping for another big attendance.

The concert includes other popular favourites, such as Khachaturian's Adagio from Spartacus, also known as The Onedin Line, and Ravel's Bolero.

Tickets are available from 5 to 15 at the City Hall Box Office, tel (01482) 226655.
