Research shows men are better slimmers than women and one Driffield Slimming World member is doing his best to prove the claim by losing 10st in only eight months.
Brendan O’Donnell spent years feeling unhappy with his weight and desperate to drop the pounds.
Now he’s lost 10st and has been named his group’s Slimming World Man of the Year 2014.
Brendan said: “I always thought that slimming groups were just for women, but I decided I didn’t have anything to lose by giving Slimming World a go, so joined with my wife Sarah in August last year.
“I soon realised we were all there for the same reason. I haven’t looked back since and, at 10st lighter, I definitely don’t have any regrets about joining the group. I recommend it to everyone now – men and women!”
On joining the group with his wife Sarah, who has lost four stone herslf, Brendan began following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, which is a big hit with men because slimmers can eat hearty meals without worrying about portion sizes and still lose weight. He said: “The great thing is you don’t go hungry. It’s about healthy eating – and man-sized, satisfying helpings of healthy food too – not fads and gimmicks. We make our favourite meals in a low-fat way, so I can still have curries and Chinese dishes, steak and chips and roast dinners.”
As the pounds started to drop off, Brendan found he had more energy: “Slimming World encourages you to boost your weight loss and fitness by becoming more active, but you can start as big or as small as you like. Now I regularly complete 5k and 10k runs, something I never thought I would do and I can honestly say I feel like a different man since losing weight.’
Consultant Shirley Sowersby, who ran the Thursday night Slimming World group that Brendan attends for most of his weight loss, said she’s incredibly proud.
“Brendan is proof that men can benefit from getting support to eat more healthily and become more active just as much as women. I just hope that when other men read his story they’ll feel more comfortable about joining a Slimming World group, especially now they know they won’t be the only man there and that the research shows they’re likely to do really well! It’s extremely important because the obesity crisis doesn’t just affect women – in fact, there are more overweight men than women in the UK.”
The Slimming World group Brendan attends is every Thursday at The Methodist Schoolroom, Westgate at 7.30pm. Anyone interested in joining the group can pop along or for more information they can call new Consultant Dawn on 07771 926064
