Hangars - Modular UK's jobs boost for town

ONE hundred new jobs are set to be created and dozens more have been secured following the opening of new factories at Driffield's historic former hangars.

The buildings on the outskirts of the town have been developed by Caledonian Building Systems and locally based firm, Modular UK, who were bought by Caledonian earlier this year.

Around 2m has been spent to develop the new facilities, which were officially opened by Bill Griffiths, chief executive of American-based parent company Champion Homes, last Thursday afternoon.

He said that it was 'a pleasure to celebrate growth and expansion'.

He said: "We are really excited.

"When times are tough and we are closing factories in the US, it's great to come here and open this facility."

Mr Griffiths also paid tribute to the work put in by staff to get the new facilities ready.

He told them: "You have done a great job in difficult circumstances over a very short space of time."

Modular UK, who were previously based at nearby Hutton Cranswick, have alre-ady moved into one of the three former RAF buildings which have been developed by the firms.

Mr Griffiths said the move had secured the company's future, as well as that of the firm's 90 workers, as well as offering potential for expansion.

And Stephen Wightman, Modular UK's managing director said the move had already enabled them to take on projects they would not have been able to complete at their former site.

"It's a major opportunity for expansion for us. It's great," he said.

The factories will also provide an extra 25 percent of construction space for Caledonian, who have their headquarters near Newark, Notting-hamshire and are unable to expand their present site further.

As first reported in our sister newspaper, the Driffield Post, on Friday, a hundred permanent jobs are set to be created once full production begins on the site.

It is also thought that between 50 and 60 other posts could be generated when the need arises.
