Have your say

The Boy Soldiers of No 6 Boys Training Regiment Royal Signals, who were based at Victoria Barracks Beverley between 1949 and 1955, are facing their final muster.

The regiment have had an association which has met regularly at Beverley for their annual re-union for a number of years.

The association will hold its last Muster in September 2014, and it was the express wish of members to return to Beverley one last time as it holds so many memories for them.

The reason for closure of the association is the advancing age of its members, the difficulty of travel and falling numbers due to infirmity.

The “Boys”, who came from all over the UK, including boys from the previously Nazi occupied Channel Islands and from Ireland, enlisted straight from school to be trained from 14 or 15 years of age as potential None Commissioned Officers (NCO’s) in the Royal Signals - the British Army’s main communications Regiment.

The Boys received a good education and extremely tough training in Military skills and disciplines. Most went on to serve with distinction in the many Military Campaigns, and in the Cold War, and in many countries throughout the world. Many of the posts were highly sensitive and not all servicement served in uniform.

Elderly local residents will remember the “Boys” all those years ago and it is fitting that in this 100th year since the start of the first World War and the 65 years since the old first world war barracks at Normandy Camp were occupied by Boy Soldiers that we should once again celebrate in Beverley.

A Morrison’s Supermarket on Normandy Avenue stands where the old Barracks once stood and a small display still exists within the store. Morrisons have always been very supportive and have assisted us in producing a History of the Regiment a copy of which is available as a computer download on request

The final celebrations will consist of a dinner with a senior Army Officer as Speaker, the sounding of the last Post at the Beverley Memorial Gardens and a short Parade to a Church Service.

Anyone with memories of the Boys or who have any photographs or memories to share can phone John Wardle Press Officer on 01246 590573 or Email atjohn.wardle2011@btinternet.com.
