Archbishop to lead Lost Trawlerman's Day service

STAND, Hull's fishing heritage organisation, has announced that John Sentamu, The Archbishop of York will lead the next Lost Trawlerman's Day Memorial Service to be held at Noon, Sunday January 18 2009 at The Lock-head, St Andrews Dock, Hull.

Everyone will be made welcome and flowers will be available to cast into the water.

Held since 1990, Lost Trawlerman's Day is the annual open-air memorial service to commemorate Hull's estimated 8000 lost trawlermen who perished at sea over the last 100 years or so. 2008 marked the 40th anniversary of the Triple Trawler Disaster in which 58 men were lost on three trawlers within a month.

Lost Trawlerman's Day remembers all men lost during peacetime whether in disasters or individual accidents.

The service is a mixture of prayers, songs and readings culminating in the laying of wreaths at the gates to the old fish dock by bereaved families and the Lord Mayor. At the end of the service all those present are invited to cast a flower into the river to remember their lost loved ones.

Lost Trawlerman's Day has become a focal point each year for the tremendous loss of life at sea experienced in the heyday of the former fishing industry. The service attracts all generations including the young who sometimes didn't know their lost family members but still feel loss.

This is the first time the Archbishop of York has led the service, which is arranged by Rev Tony Cotson. A service will also be held on the day of Lost Trawlerman's Day commencing at 9.30am at St John's the Baptist Church, St George's Road, Hull. All welcome.
