HOUSEHOLDERS in the Driffield area have been given the chance to sign up for online reminders to put out their blue recycling bins.
A new free email service has been launched by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council this week in a further bid to boost recycling totals across the district.

Coun Symon Fraser, the authority’s portfolio holder for the environment, said residents ha
d asked for email reminders after a similar text messaging service, which was launched last year, had proved successful.

He said: “Anything we can do to increase effective blue bin collection helps send less waste to landfill.

"This new service is a further example of the ways in which we respond to our taxpayers in a cost effective way."

Under the programme, residents who sign up will receive an email on the afternoon before their blue bin is due to be collected.

The scheme is part of the council’s Target 45+ campaign to recycle 45 per cent of household waste by 2010.

Failure to reach the target could lead to the council having to pay government fines of up to nine million pounds.

The scheme also follows on from last week’s launch of a new trial in the Driffield area of brown bins for garden waste collection.

To sign up, residents should log onto www.eastriding.gov.uk and access the MyEastriding information section.

The scheme is an option at the application stage.

More information about the service and the Target 45+ campaign can be found by visiting www.target45plus.org.uk.
