India expedition reaches peak

Robyn Brooks, 18, has returned to Beverley after an unforgettable expedition to India with Raleigh International, during which she climbed the second highest peak in India.

She applied to go on expedition with Raleigh International because she wanted to break the routine and experience something different, something she most definitely achieved.

Her favourite moment of her 10-week expedition was during the trek, when she climbed the second highest mountain in India, Missapulimala Peak.

She said: “When I got to the top it was so amazing; I’ll always take that sense of achievement with me.”

Robyn also participated in environment and community projects; building bio-gas units and working with a turtle conservation organisation, which are designed to be sustainable and of use to the local community.

Thirty per cent of the one billion population in India are below the poverty line and the work that Robyn has participated in with Raleigh International helps make a difference to these people.

Robyn believes that her confidence has improved and now she feels like she can achieve anything after completing the trek. Robyn also commented on the strong sense of team spirit that helped motivate everyone to reach the end.

“All in all, Raleigh has been an absolutely amazing and unforgettable experience – one of the best things I’ve ever done,” she enthused.

During her time on expedition, the 18-year-old thought about what she would like to do when she returned home. She now wants to join the Royal Navy. Her time on the expedition has made her more focused about what she would like to achieve in her future, something which Raleigh International advocates.

Stacey Adams, CEO of Raleigh International, added: “We work really hard to ensure that our voluntary work in our countries is meaningful and that it makes a real difference to local communities. Above all, what makes Raleigh unique is our commitment to make sure every person who comes out with us goes on a personal development journey as well as an adventure.”

Robyn received a graduate bursary from Raleigh International, which helped fund part of her expedition. She also received donations from her local church and rotary club, and she held a sponsored truck wash at her dad’s workplace.

Raleigh International is a youth and sustainable development charity. It runs expeditions for people from a wide range of backgrounds, nationalities and life stages.

Raleigh’s aim is to increase the leadership and employability skills of young people whilst also raising their awareness of their role as active global citizens.

Since Raleigh was established in 1984, the charity has supported more than 35,000 people through its expeditions.
