We should choose own charities
Firstly may I correct a factually inaccurate statement in the article 'Grants waiting for takers' (BG April 25). In 1999 there was not a small grants fund, when I was the Mayor.
I believe that the local taxpayers have a choice as to which charity they wish to support. I also believe that the town council should not become an alternative source of funding for the shortfall in lottery grants. Again, taxpayers can buy lottery tickets by choice. Local taxation is not paid by choice and carries a penalty on non payment.
I fail to understand why the support of the East Riding Voluntary Action Services is held in such high regard. It is obvious if funding has become more difficult they would welcome money from any source.
Five pounds for a gallon of petrol, higher mortgage payments, higher energy bills, increased council tax (including police, fire service) 34 per cent increase in Beverley Town Council precept plus special expenses; was this £40,000 justified?
This question is for you the Beverley Town Council taxpayer.
