As Victor says: I don't believe it

IN the 50s my family was involved in fundraising for several organisations.

So I went as a young helper, or in the audience to Fleming House, Hodgson's Ballroom, Constitutional Hall, Tiger Lane, St John Ambulance HQ, Keldgate Mission, Regal Ballroom, Beverley Arms Ballroom, Marble Arch cinema, and a large room above the pr
emises in Saturday Market, where the Informal Club met.

I can't remember exactly where that was, but I attended a concert there, where Sylvia Ferguson sang, and a young Ruth Baker (later Madoc) gave elocution.

I think she was about 13 and so was I, and I was impressed.
Despite the proliferation of halls as above, (now mostly gone), often provisos existed prohibiting bookings, for religious or political reasons, or as one blunt trustee said: "If your face didn't fit."

I thus remember my father explaining that this was the reason why the Trust document specified "without distinction of political, religious or other opinions' and it had to be 'for recreation and social, moral and intellectual development for the inhabitants of Beverley borough".

Apart from the obvious task of raising the money, the hall's trustees have a big responsibility in achieving all the aspirations of the hall, which is badly needed, despite one of your reader's assurances that there are many alternative venues for hire in Beverley.

Like Victor Meldrew: 'I don't believe it'.
