WOLDS villagers were feeling the impact of the weekend's heavy rain as traffic was brought to a standstill, events cancelled and ducks swam on main roads.
A fire crew from Driffield was called to Garton-on-the-Wolds at about 2am on Saturday after the village pond spilled out onto the Driffield to York road bringing traffic to a standstill.

Pumps were used to drain the water but Glenn Ramsden, spokesman for Humber Fire and Rescue Service said it was no easy task: “A fire crew from Driffield went and they tried to pump it out but there’s no where to pump it to. We found somewhere that was drier and ran some hoses out to it.”

This is not the first time the village has been hit by flooding and Robert Jones, clerk to Garton-on-the-Wolds Parish Council, is convinced it will not be the last.

Mr Jones said: “It always happens when the culverts and drains block up, they can’t take any more and they get overloaded. It runs out onto the road and just stops the traffic.”

According to Mr Jones the main road flooded sporadically between Friday and Sunday and he believes it will keep happening until the East Riding of Yorkshire Council tackles the problem.

Mr Jones said: “The East Riding Council know about it and until they do something about it it will be a regular problem. With increasing rain fall and increasing blockage it’s becoming the norm and almost a given.”

A spokesman for ERYC said they are aware of the problem and will be looking into it.

“We are investigating the gullies to see if there is an overflow from the pond into the sewage system,” he said.

Wetwang experienced similar problems with their pond overflowing onto the main road giving the ducks a temporary new home.

Frank Wilson, chairman of Wetwang Parish Council, said: “It did flood temporarily by the pond but not for long so that wasn’t a problem.”

The annual Wolds Game and Country Show, at Sledmere House was called off on Saturday while vehicles had to be towed off the water logged grounds.

More than three inches of rain fell over Driffield in 24 hours over the weekend and with further heavy rain forecast for the Yorkshire region this week the Met office has raised some concerns about localised flooding, particularly in areas where the ground is already saturated.

A Met Office based team will continue to to deliver rainfall warnings to emergency responders as necessary.
