Caught out by parking change

WITH regard to the sudden spate of parking tickets issued at Tesco supermarket in Beverley, I too have been a victim.

Some time ago when I couldn't find a parking space and other cars were parked on the walkway, I asked an attendant if it was all right to park there, he said yes but only on a Friday and Saturday when it was so busy.

Some time later I was with my daughter and we couldn't find a parking space, and asked the new car park attendant if we were all right to park there as we didn't want to break any rules.

His words were: "Yes but at your own risk as you are not covered by insurance if there is any damage to your car".

Only three weeks later, on a busy Saturday morning, this same attendant was busy putting parking tickets on all the cars parked in these spaces.

When I reminded him that he had told me it was all right to park there he said 'they' had changed the rules.

Nowhere was there any notification of this and he told me to appeal, but my appeal was rejected and as it took longer than 14 days the fine consequently went up from 40 to 60.

I understand the official reason for the change of rules is for safety reasons but unofficially I was told it was because they cannot monitor how long cars are parked there as there are no sensors in these spaces.

However, whatever the reason, my complaint is not that they have changed the rules but that I was told twice that it was okay to park there and after allowing parking in these spaces since the store opened, I think it would have been much fairer in the first instance to issue a warning and put up notices informing other motorists of the change.

I wrote to the Tesco manager 10 days ago but as yet have not had a reply.

I also contacted my local MP who also wrote to Tesco on my behalf but he has not had a reply either.
