Budding growers wanted for Beverley in Bloom ‘12
With 2011 having drawn to an end, I would like to thank all the people, groups, businesses and schools who took part in Beverley in Bloom and who managed to put on a worthy display, despite the economic restrictions that everyone is going through.
Also thanks to Worklink in Cottingham, Focus DIY for their donations and to the staff at Ranch, in Wednesday Market, who watered and removed rubbish from the three-tier planters, which was much appreciated.
This year, the town is entering Yorkshire in Bloom again and with the special events of the Queens Jubilee and the Olympic torch passing through the town it is even more of a reason to put on the best show possible to celebrate.
In 2010, the town won a silver gilt award overall with areas such as The Sessions House, Coronation Gardens the Hengate Memorial Gardens and the barrier baskets and planters picked out as areas of achievement in the Spring entry, and Beverley Minster, commercial and business premises, three primary schools, the Station Square, the racecourse and the various hanging baskets and planters in the Summer judging.
The judges also highlighted areas that could be even better with an emphasis on the environment and community participation. These included giving further examples of biodiversity, wildlife and natural habitat conservation in larger green spaces, such as the Westwood pasture and woodland.
Many of these areas are owned by East Riding of Yorkshire County Council rather than Beverley Town Council so there is not always an opportunity for Beverley in Bloom to have an input about how these are managed but I hope that this auspicious year will mean that more is done to improve things.
They would also have liked to see more evidence that all groups, businesses and organisations in the town were working together to produce higher standards throughout the town, to give greater environmental and economic benefits for everyone.
It was noted that the input the primary schools had made was good but they wondered if the secondary schools were carrying forward the interest into later years.
The main theme throughout the winners’ success in 2011 was that both business and communities had worked together and filled every corner with something of interest and included wildlife and bee-friendly displays along with innovative planting and sculpture.
This year it would be good if we could show that the environmental and community aspects, not just the municipal planting, had been given more prominence, with neglected areas given equal treatment. Then maybe we can be rewarded with a gold.
