Beverley garden centre selects its Charities of the Year

STAFF at Peter Barratt's Garden Centre in Beverley have selected three organisations as their 'Charities of the Year' for 2009.

During the coming 12 months, the garden centre looks set to host a series of fundraising activities with Dove House Hospice in Hull, When You Wish Upon a Star in Grimsby and Hull Homeless and Rootless Project (HHARP).

Garden Centre Manager, Teresa Corderoy said: "We look forward to working with these charities on various fundraising schemes to maximise our support for each of them in 2009."

Dove House Hospice specialises in palliative care. It provides care for people in the community with life-limiting illnesses, such as cancer and motor neurone disease. There is no charge for any of its services as the Hospice is maintained by funds raised in the community and support from the Health Authority.

Sarah Cusick, Fundraising Manager at Dove House Hospice, said: "We are delighted to be one of the garden centre's chosen charities of the year for 2009 and look forward to working with them in the future. The money raised will allow us to continue our work caring for adults in Hull and the East Riding area who have life-limiting illnesses."

When You Wish Upon a Star grants the wishes of children across the UK aged between two and 16-years-old, all of whom have life-threatening illness. The charity's aim is to create magical memories for the family and the child to remember. Whatever the wish, where possible, When You Wish Upon a Star will aim to make it come true.

HHARP is a centre for homeless people in the Hull area. It has a 21 bed night shelter with showers, a clothing store, lounge and computing facilities. It offers general counselling and support, and also serves lunches and evening meals.

Teresa added: "We applaud the work of these charities and hope we can raise as much money as possible to help with their fundraising efforts."
