Ambassador role for youngster
Imogen Godwin, from Beverley, has become an ambassador for VICTA, the nationwide charity for blind and partially-sighted children.
VICTA raises funds to provide visually-impaired children and young people with equipment and services to help them develop socially, emotionally and educationally which will enhance and improve their lives.
The charity gave Imogen an accessible computer (speech and magnification) and it soon became apparent that the 14-year-old was a girl with passion and plenty of get up and go.
Immie is an avid blogger and will be helping VICTA with local fundraising and promotion.
Tracie Tappenden, VICTA’s director, said: “Imogen is an amazing example to all visually impaired children – and, frankly, sighted people too.
“She has a maturity and presence beyond her years and has shown the passion and commitment to do something about the things she feels strongly about.”
Immie regularly stops off at Costa Coffee in Beverley with friends after school and thought a Braille menu would be a great idea for her and other visually-impaired people.
So, not being the shy and retiring type, she set about doing something about it – and now Costa in Beverley provide all their visually-impaired customers with a full Braille menu, on request.
Imogen has also volunteered to help out at the charity’s annual family weekend, where visually-impaired children and their relatives can get together to learn and have fun.
