EFFORTS are being made to save a popular bus service in Beverley which provides a social life-line for many elderly residents but was under threat.
Ward councillors Gary Shores and Kerri Harold say East Riding Council has negotiated with a private coach firm to ensure the 522 bus service in the Normandy Avenue area is continued.
Coun Shores said: “This is great news for the residents. This s
ervice is a vital link for many into the centre of Beverley. Although the service will be reduced in its frequency, at least there will still be a service provided.
Coun Harold added: “I understand the current bus service is to be withdrawn for commercial reasons but we know that this is a social life line for many of the elderly residents of the area. We are very pleased that as a council we are putting a replacement service on.”
Beverley MP Graham Stuart says he he has been contacted by a number of residents concerned about the threat to the future of the service, and has written to the council expressing their worries.
“I'm delighted to say that the council have confirmed that they are doing their best to save the service. They have made arrangements for the 522 to continue for the next 12 weeks while they assess the cost of subsidising the route permanently.
“I know many elderly people use the 522 to get into town and I'm very pleased the council are doing their best,” he said.
