ENVIRONMENTALIST David Bellamy has named Heron Lakes park in Routh, near Beverley, as one of the UK's greenest holiday spots, and given it a special award for protecting the natural world.
Heron Lakes, which is home to 50 holiday lodges, is one of this year’s winners of the David Bellamy Conservation Awards.
Over the past decade, owners John and Adrian Bird have planted 1,000s of indigenous trees on the park, creating a natural haven for deer, red squirrels, badgers and other wildlife.
The creation of four lakes covering 25 acres has made Heron Lakes a sanctuary for wildfowl, and a focus for rare bird species.
Prof Bellamy said the owners had created ‘a wildlife wonderland’ at the park, and were making an important contibution to protecting the area’s flora and fauna.
