POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a teenage cyclist from Beverley was seriously injured in a road accident near Bishop Burton last night, Thursday.

A Shiptonthorpe man, who was driving the car involved, was treated for shock at the scene of the incident on the A1079, which happened at around 10.40pm last night.

A police spokesman said an orange Fiat Punto was travelling towards Market Weighton from Beverley when it was in collision with a silver bicycle around a mile north of Bishop Burton.

The 18 year old male cyclist suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary, where he underwent surgery.

He was said to be in a critical but stable condition this morning.

The driver of the Punto, a 38 year old man from Shiptonthorpe, was treated by paramedics for shock.

Officers are keen to trace the driver of a JCB-type vehicle who may have passed the scene immediately prior to the incident, or anyone else who has information.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Humberside Police Roads Policing Department on 0845 6060222, quoting log number 667 of February 4.
