THE family of Simon Murden, the Beverley charity worker shot dead by police, this week returned to the scene of his shooting on the sixth day of the inquest into his death.
Simon’s father David, and mother Dorothy, together with members of the jury, were at the Little Chef services near South Cave alongside the A63. They were shown the spot where Simon (26) died after being hit with six live rounds fired by two officers on the morning of March 22, 2005.
The inquest heard from driver Nigel Norton, who was on his way to work when he was in collision with Mr Murden, who was drving his father’s transit van the wrong way down the A63, shortly before the fatal shooting.
Mr Norton told the hearing he tried to swerve but the van seemed to pull towards him rather than avoid him.
Last week the inquest heard that David Murden rang police in the early hours of March 22 to warn them his son was having a cannabis-induced psychotic episode.
Later he told police his son had left the family home in Beverley with a ‘touristy’ African sword, but insisted his son was not aggressive.
The inquest continues.
