THE East Riding of Yorkshire Council is installing CCTV cameras in 10 hackney carriage vehicles in Bridlington for a six-month trial as part of a Safe Communities 'safer taxi' initiative which may be rolled out to other areas such as Driffield.
The aim to make taxi customers and drivers feel safer in the early hours of the morning.

The cameras will monitor the whole vehicle and will be able to record sound. They will also be equipped with infrared for night monitoring.
Footage taken by
the cameras will be encrypted and will be viewed only by licensing officers or Humberside Police Force - which may use the footage as evidence if incidents occur.

The number of attacks on drivers and customers running off without paying has increased in the past 12 months as have allegations made against taxi drivers by customers.

The installation of the cameras will be mainly a preventative measure to assist in reducing alcohol related crime and disorder in the area and solving incidents of crime, which may take place cabs.

Female passengers may also feel safer if travelling in a taxi fitted with CCTV. In other areas where CCTV has been installed in cabs, taxi-related crime has fallen by up to 90 per cent.

Tina Holtby, acting licensing manager, said: "We realise incidents are more likely to occur at the weekend in the early hours of the morning when customers are more likely to be in drink.

Coun Jane Evison, portfolio holder for cultural services, housing and public protection, said: "Drivers in are occasionally subject to unfounded allegations and violence against them. This is a way of improving safety and security for taxi drivers and their customers.
"We are happy to pilot this scheme.

Should the pilot exercise prove successful then consideration will be given to adoption in other areas of the East Riding of Yorkshire including installation in private hire vehicles if funding can be successfully secured.

Initial funding for the CCTV scheme has been provided as part of a successful safe communities funding bid.
