IT is business as usual in Beverley's Wednesday Market - that is the message from traders and council chiefs as work continues on the major re-paving scheme which has been underway for several weeks.
The work is part of the £1.85m resurfacing scheme throughout the town centre which East Riding Council says is progressing well.
It is hoped that the scheme will be completed in the next eight weeks, before the National Road Race cycling champions
hip weekend in Beverley at the start of August.
The market held on Wednesdays has transferred temporarily to the pedestrian area next to the Angel pub and a drop-off area for pedestrians is being created.
As reported in the Beverley Guardian, some traders had feared that the resurfacing work would hit trade in the area.
Gail Cahill, the council's project manager for the Toll Gavel/Wednesday Market repaving scheme, said: "Improvements can already be seen along the scheme in Wednesday Market and work is going well.
"We've had many positive comments which motivate everyone involved to ensure that we provide a scheme that will be a success and bring benefits to the pedestrian heart of Beverley.
"There is a firm commitment that the work will allow retailers to trade as normal and the council would urge residents and visitors alike to keep coming to the centre of Beverley to take advantage of its facilities, and in particular the many independent shops."
Antony Barton, owner of Wednesday Market's Amanti shop and a member of the Beverley Chamber of Trade, is keen to stress that, despite the works, Wednesday Market is very much open for business.
He said: "There is now a huge variety of shops in the Wednesday Market area, plus plenty of places to get a coffee or an ice cream. We would encourage people to come down and have a browse so they don't miss out on some of the best shopping Beverley has to offer."
